Sharing the road in Santa Monica: These folks are getting the most-needed message right in front of drivers, putting the ad space on the back of a bus to good use! Tent getting lots of traffic at the farmers markets… last summer we fixed over 600 bikes for free in neighborhoods with no bike shops. This summer we’re on track to get more than 1000 bikes back on the street safely. And we’re at 16 farmers markets all over Boston.

B2M Community Input Maps design (South Boston farmer’s market). Did we mention there are 16 of these? The maps are big (about 2x3 feet). They come from the BRA and we spent a bunch of time cleaning up the color coding (commercial, residential by density, institutional, etc) and other styling. The key includes the elements that residents can add (see the Stickers for bike infrastructure, designed by Matt Moore). They can also draw bike lanes, cycletracks, etc. on the map.

B2M community maps design (Ashmont farmer’s market). From Allston to Ashmont, Charlestown to the Roxbury Peace Garden, we are everywhere. Find us at your neighborhood market and try it out! There are stickers for traffic calming, needs enforcement, 4 kinds of bike parking, Bike Delivery, etc. Draw lines on the map where you want bike lanes. We use the community input when we begin to organize advocacy in your neighborhood. This is how good design gets things done out there!

The flyer we use to advertise Bike to Market (B2M) in the neighborhoods.

This one’s pretty festive and vibrant for broad appeal, and definitely showcases the food tie-in, which is super important to our mission of improving public health. The B2M logo uses a slab-serif typeface that’s similar in style to Rockwell, so it works as a family with the BCU logo and our other materials. Flat blue graphics (with bike parts, city skyline, and the silhouetted commuter bike) make the fruit and veggie photos pop.

The Bike Union sets up its tent and repair stand in 16 farmers markets throughout Boston. Free repairs and tune-ups are offered by our volunteers. We sell helmets for cheap, and collect the community’s feedback on our Neighborhood Maps. (Where do you want to see bike lanes? Which buildings need bike racks?).

Keep Your Head Out of the Gutter!

These are some screenshots from the background of our Keynote presentation, which was first presented at the Ibex store on Newbury Street with two BCU members giving a talk on safety basics for urban biking (geared mostly toward a college crowd).

The tone is a little bit irreverent. A lot of these slides show sort of boring traffic diagrams, so we tried to make it a little bit fun with odd photos culled from the web and these custom title slides.
